IT'S ALL IN THE OUTCOME - CONSEQUENTIALISM
Step 1: Set the scene
The images of child poverty are so heartbreaking to such an extent that we sometimes turn to take
for granted what we have and feel that the world is unjust to us forgetting that there are those who
are less fortunate than us. Looking at the images of ‘child poverty’ reminds me that poverty is an
ancient reality, with especially cruel effects on children. It has been common across cultures, worst
in hard times, when poverty means life and death.
Which is the most likely utilitarian option? (Why do you say this?)
In my opinion, the most likely utilitarian option is the second option (labelled as B). It reads, “It’s
hard to say it, but given the rising human population, perhaps this is a blessing in disguise for the
human species as a whole”. The statement supports utilitarianism principle which teaches that an
action is right if it tends to maximise or promote happiness, it is considered good as long as it
helps a great number of people. In this case, if “20 000 children die each day the exponential
population growth is reduced and enormous responsibility is reduced off the shoulders of billion
people that already exist in the earth ”.
I believe that the most utilitarian form is option B which states that “it’s hard to say but given the
rising human population perhaps this is a blessing in disguise for the human species as a whole”
because as the utilitarian states that any action is judged as good if it maximizes the total amount
of good in a system and so I believe that according to this statement losing about 20,000 children
per day due to poverty would benefit the rest of the population as there will be less people to share
good and services in the world or losing 20,000 children wouldn’t make much differences as the
rest of the population would benefit from it.
What do you feel about this opinion?
With the outlookfor the future energy requirements, especially now that we are experiencing power
outages in South Africa, we are living in a country that is facing water scarcity (not only South
Africa other counties as well),food supplies looking bleaker than it has for decades, in my opinion
all of this is caused by high exponential growth rate. This growth rate causes excessive
consumption of energy and natural resources. If humanity still had the same stable population that
was maintained throughout the first millennium of the current era, we wouldn’t have to worry about
individual consumption of energy and natural resources. It is precisely because our population is
so large and growing so fast that we must care. This puts an enormous amount of pressure and
responsibility on thegovernment subsequently on us because we have to assist by payingmore
than normal tax.
