SYNOPSIS
Pragya Prasun Singh started the Atijeevan Foundation (Atijeevan) in 2013 with a mission to rehabilitate and
empower victims of acid attacks. Singh, who is a survivor of an acid attack herself, wanted to ensure that the
past traumatic experiences of survivors did not impede their opportunity to make a place in society and lead a
n
meaningful and dignified life. This case provides a detailed account of the genesis, mission, modus operandi,
and the range of services provided by Atijeevan, including medical and legal support, counselling, shelter homes,
tio
and livelihood opportunities. It also illustrates the various challenges that survivors of acid attacks faced in the
workplace. Singh learned about the challenges through interactions with the survivors she trained and helped
find employment. Many of them reported incidents of harassment, bullying, discrimination, and insensitive

behaviour from coworkers. Aware of this unsettling reality, Singh is now contemplating how to help and is

The Dilemma
After conversing with some survivors of acid attacks that she helped place in various organizations, and
understanding their challenges and experiences, Singh faced a dilemma. She was surprised to find out that many
survivors were discriminated against and bullied by their coworkers. When Singh trained survivors for the job
environment, she did not foresee that they would encounter new challenges after recovery from the acid attack
and the difficult treatment. Singh is now facing a dilemma about helping survivors in the workplace.
The Two Options
Singh is considering two potential approaches to help the survivors who are subjected to bullying in the
workplace:
• Continue offering personalized support and counselling to the survivors and make them strong enough
to address challenges and reduce dependency on others to resolve problems.
