Medical Management of MG -correct- answer-- Directed at improving function

- Mestinon, an anticholinesterase medication is the first line of therapy. See chart
64-4 for side effects. Mestinon has fewer side effects than the other meds.

agents are used are the immunomodulating drugs. The goal is to decrease
production of the antibodies (steriods;ie Prednisone)
- Plasmapheresis- plasma exchange produces a temporary reduction in the level
of circulating antibodies; it lasts for a few weeks and it is a technique used to treat
exacerbations.
- Surgical Management that includes a thymectomy (removal of the thymus
gland). It can produce antigen-specific immunosuppression and result in clinical
improvement. Post-op (ICU) watch for respiratory complications. It might take up
to 3 years before seeing improvement due to the long life of circulating T cells.
