QUESTION 1

1.1 (a) Definition and importance of a teaching strategy

A teaching strategy is a planned method or approach that a teacher uses to deliver
content and facilitate learning in a way that helps learners achieve lesson objectives.
It is important in lesson planning because it ensures lessons are structured, caters to
diverse learning needs, promotes engagement, and aligns teaching activities with
assessment.

1.1 (b) Chosen strategy: Cooperative Learning

Description:
Cooperative Learning is an instructional method where learners work in small,
structured groups to achieve a shared goal, with each member responsible for
contributing to the group’s success.

Why teaching strategies are important:
They guide how learning content is delivered, ensure lessons are learner-centered, and
promote skills such as communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

Practical classroom example:
In a Grade 9 Natural Sciences class on “Renewable Energy,” learners are divided into
groups of four. Each group researches one renewable energy source (solar, wind,
hydro, biomass). They then present their findings to the class, discussing benefits,
challenges, and examples in South Africa. This encourages teamwork, builds critical
thinking, and accommodates diverse learning styles.
