Research Methodology M4
Daniel Trew
In this assignment I will assess findings of the research project in relation
to the original project.
My research project was focused on the disorder known as ADHD-
Attention deficit hyperactive Disorder. I decided on this topic as during
one of my placements in a primary school there was a child who had
ADHD. I knew what the basics of it was but I did not really know that much
of it into detail. I wanted to get a wider scope on the publics knowledge
and understandings of it. I have decided to use questionnaires as these
are more economical. In addition to this, questionnaires are also more
practical and efficient as they are easy to understand and answer and are
less time consuming. My hypothesis for this research project was that “the
general public are aware of what ADHS is but they do not fully understand
the aspects of it.”
I used a questionnaire with answered I created for my research project. I
believed that a questionnaire would allow me to get a wide range of data
that would help to meet not only my aims but to also test my hypothesis
and to see if it could be proven or not. I would be able to include a lot of
information in a questionnaire that would allow my individuals to write as
much as possible leaving me with a great range of data. I had a wide
range of questions based on the disorder ADHD.
The first question that started off my questionnaire was if the individuals
taking part were aware of what ADHD is and if they knew what the
acronym stood for. The data I was able to receive from this question was
that 12 of the 20 participants who filled out the questionnaire were
actually unaware of what ADHD was. There was only 3 of the 8 who did
know what is was who were able to expand the acronym completely
correct. I believe that the findings for this question support my hypothesis
that the general public are aware of what ADHD is but they do not fully
understand the aspects of it. I have been able to come to this conclusion
as the 8 did have a general understanding of the disorder however could
not go into further fine details of it. According to a study carried out by
Jane D. McLeod, 2007, Just under 2 thirds of respondents had heard of
ADHD; most could not provide detailed information about the disorder.
This project was carried out through face-to-face interviews. Despite the
methods of the two research projects being different myself and Jane D.
McLeod have both collected similar data. Our collection of data matches
throughout both of our projects.
The second question in my questionnaire was asking the participant if
they were aware of any way that an individual with ADHD may be affected
in their daily life by the disorder. The data I received from this question
was that 2 out of 20 people were aware of how an individual with ADHD
would have their everyday life affected by this disorder. This meant that
only 10% of the participants knew. I believe that the findings for this
question support my hypothesis that the general public are aware of what
