Phaswana Mpe in Welcome to Our Hillbrow interacts with the postcolonial
theme in such a way that challenges and reads back the colonial discourse
and its ideology. The theoretical ideas and knowledge on the aspect of
colonial discourse developed by Homi Bhabha, particularily, the idea of fixity,
construction of otherness, and stereotype are very beneficial in untangling the
