SYNOPSIS
The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) was established as the primary financial institution
for promoting and financing the micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) sector in India. The main
n
objective of SIDBI has been to promote and develop the MSME sector by providing financial assistance
tio
through its direct lending process. This practice gives borrowers access to funding they may not have been
able to obtain through traditional lending channels. However, SIDBI was following a manual loan-lending
process, which was resulting in delays in disbursing loans. With increased demand for loans, it was becoming
lu
more difficult for SIDBI to disburse loans in a timely manner. The case discusses the process of digitalizing
the direct lending process at SIDBI and whether the bank should move toward hyperautomation.
So
OBJECTIVES
• Understand the challenges faced by SIDBI in their manual direct-lending process and the need of
digitalization.
• Learn how to carry out a digitalization process in an organization and how to handle the challenges.

Discuss.

Digitalization has become important for many organizations, but there may still be exceptions. With the

rapid advancement of technology and the rise of digital-native competitors, organizations that fail to
embrace digital transformation risk falling behind their competitors and losing relevance in the marketplace.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, as many
organizations had to shift to remote work and digital channels to continue operating. Digitalization can

enable organizations to streamline processes, reduce costs, and improve the customer experience, among
other benefits. As such, it is no longer a choice but rather a critical priority for organizations that want to
remain competitive and thrive in today’s digital-first world.

tio
Hyperautomation refers to the integration of advanced technologies such as robotic process automation
(RPA), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) to automate and streamline business
processes.2 The aim of hyperautomation is to automate as many manual and repetitive tasks as possible to
