Question 1: Effect of Brain Damage on Language Abilities (20 Marks)
Language is a vital cognitive skill, relying on the cooperation of various specialized
regions within the brain. When certain brain areas suffer damage due to conditions such
as strokes, traumatic injuries, tumors, or neurological diseases, the result can be a
serious disruption in language use and understanding. These impairments are known
collectively as aphasia, which illustrates how closely language functions are tied to
brain structure and health.
1.1 Brain Regions Involved in Language Function
In most individuals—especially those who are right-handed—language processing is
concentrated in the left cerebral hemisphere. The most critical regions include:
Broca’s area, located in the left frontal lobe, is essential for producing coherent
and grammatically correct speech.
Wernicke’s area, situated in the left temporal lobe, is key to language
comprehension and the processing of meaningful speech and text.
