Question:
Using the extract detailed below as a starting point, write an essay in which you
discuss the narrator’s love for and relationship with Desiree in the novel. In particular,
focus on: the theme of love; on how the narrator summarises his relationship with
Desiree in the extract; and on how the narrator describes his feelings towards
Desiree, and hers towards him, throughout the novel. Your response should closely
consider diction and other literary devices as relevant to the topic.
*NB: The extract on which you are required to focus begins on p. 83 with the words,
“Something unexpected happens. I watch a moth,…” and ends on p. 84 with the
words, “To think. All of three hours” (Mohlele 2013: 83 – 84).
Introduction
In writing the essay it is important that you begin with AN INTRODUCTION. The
introduction serves two purposes. It tells the reader what your essay will discuss.
Secondly, it gives you direction or guideline so that you do not lose track of the
topics you will be discussing. What is even important is that the introduction must
have elements of the assignment question. For example, it is imperative that you
discuss the relationship between Desiree and the narrator. Describing elements such
as the manner with which the narrator shows his love to Desiree, and how she
shows hers towards the narrator. Also, in the introduction do not forget to mention
the given extract (pgs. 83-84) which you will be using as reference. Furthermore, the
introduction must include the title of the book, author and year of publication.
Combining all these elements in the introduction shows the lecture that you have
considered all elements of the assignment. Moreover, to give the essay order, you
can organise topics in separate paragraphs. This makes it easy for the lecture to
follow. For example, paragraph one can discuss how the narrator expresses his love
towards Desiree. Paragraph two can discuss the opposite, how Desiree shows
affection to the narrator. Paragraph three can discuss the metaphor used to compare
Desiree to a flame and the narrator to a moth. *Remember: in all discussions you
