A. Resilience and Self-Care

Across vast industries, particularly the healthcare industry is highly challenging and

constantly evolving. It is to assert that my resilience is not affected as a result of managing

patients with acute conditions and burnout from working in critical care. Sometimes, I neglected
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
personal care, draining my thought energy as a direct correlation. I began to doubt my role in
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
nursing and the healthcare system in general. Nonetheless, I have now understood that I was
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
getting tired. Since then, I have strived to apply resilience practices in nursing specialties and
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
started a process of education advancement. As much as these are self-gains, I noted that if I do
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|

not take better care of myself, I am still vulnerable to burnout and compassion fatigue. Self-care
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
can help make me a stronger person, therefore increasing my chances of withstanding the
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
pressures of critical provision. This results in a stronger mentally and emotionally healthy self,
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
which leads to higher quality and invested patient and family care at the bedside (Mills et al.,
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
2021). Consequentially, the primary ways I am learning and practicing to increase self-care and

resilience are through mindfulness, better eating patterns, and exercise.

Notably, positive affirmation and meditation are approaches to mindfulness, which is a
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
deliberate act by which I train my mind to be present. It contributes to effectiveness in
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
alleviating worry and improving presence. I was able to use this last week when I had to page
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
the rapid response team because my patient was unstable. It was a very challenging day overall
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
at work, but to shift my attention and energy to be present for the family and explain some of
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
the things while tending to my patient proved very valuable. Mindfulness also proved helpful in
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
making me leave my computer and get over to the side of the other patients and attend to them.
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
Besides, eating habits are another area I need to improve as part of a lifestyle strategy to reduce
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
stress and increase my capacity to cope. Food choices disseminate the energy levels, state of
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
mind, and capacity to meet the physical rigors of nursing (Riegel et al., 2021). For example, I
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
have developed a culture of taking well-cooked, nutrient-rich meals emphasizing protein and
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
vegetables to ensure I fend off hunger in my long shifts.
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
The other ways that have also positively impacted minimizing exhaustion and ensuring
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
productivity include eating healthier snacks, drinking a lot of water, and avoiding taking a lot of
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
products containing caffeine. This better diet boosts my overall health, work focus, and
!| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !| !|
resilience. Another mode of self-care that I am in the process of nurturing is physical exercise.

Exercise is one of the ways I can manage stress and burnout, and I have alone time when
