SAPC - ANSWERSSubstance Abuse Problem Checklist (SAPC) - 300 questions in 8 categories (tx
motivation, health, personality, social relationships, employment, use/misuse of leisure time,
religious/spiritual perspectives, and legal problems)
Screening - ANSWERSTo determine if the client is appropriate for the treatment focus. Ruling
out rejection criteria.
Establish rapport, demographic information, explanation of confidentiality guidelines and
limitations. Overview of program: what is covered, costs, scheduling, philosophy/goals and a
description of the credentials of the services providers (disclosure statement).

DAST - ANSWERSThe Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) - 20 yes no questions (1 point each)
CAGE - ANSWERSvery brief (4 question) alcohol problem screening instrument.
AUDIT - ANSWERSThe Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - 10 questions
MAST - ANSWERSMichigan Alcoholism Screening Test - 24 yes/no "weighted" questions with a
total possible score of 53 and a cutoff of 20 (any score above indicates "severe alcoholism")
, AUI - ANSWERSAlcohol Use Inventory - multiple choice options from which various scales can be
derived. Explores alcohol use, key consequences of drinking, and individual awareness of an
alcohol problem.
Intake - ANSWERSA continuation of the screening process. Necessary forms are filled out. An
intake sheet is completed, the initial assessment form is completed, forms authorizing the
release of sensitive information are completed, financial arrangements finalized, consent forms
are signed by the client and counselor is assigned to the case.
Limits to Federally-protected confidentiality - ANSWERSConfidential information can only be
disclosed under these conditions:
1. if the client gives written permission (ROI)
2. In the case of a medical emergency
3. if a client threatens or harms program property or personnel
4. if the information is needed to assess the functioning of the program
5. If a court order is presented
6. If a client threatens to harm self or others
Assessment - ANSWERSIf the client is found to be a good fit for the program the next step is to
make an accurate overall assessment. The objectives of the assessment are:
1. Identify someone who has a problem with addiction
2. Assess other problems that may be present
3. Plan interventions
4. Involve family members in the assessment and treatment
5. Plan methods to test the effectiveness of the interventions
