Distributing goods
P2 - Explain the process of distributing goods through different channels from the manufacturer to the
customer
Distributing is about delivering goods from start to finish, making sure that they get there safely and in
good condition, and on time. Distributing is important because you need goods to sell, if you do not then
this affects the business reputation.
Distribution methods
The main ways of moving goods around the planet are: Lorries, Trains, ships, planes.
3 working examples:
1. Wood from Scotland to Homebase in Blackburn
2. Honda cars from Japan to showroom Blackburn
3. Independent takeaway in Blackburn
1st scenario
Wood from Scotland to Homebase Blackburn - Why
The first scenario is transporting wood that has grown in Scotland to Homebase in Blackburn. Scotland is
very rural, it contains lots of land which can be used to grow trees, and it also has a good growing
weather such as rain and sunshine, which helps to grow more trees. You can
grow trees in big numbers, and can grow a lot of trees in one place, because
there is a lot of land, this makes it easier. costs are also cheaper because the
trees are in bulk, can be chopped them down in place no traveling involved, it’s
also easier for the woodcutter because they just have to arrive in one place once
and that’s it and they can just leave after cutting enough wood, they do not need
to travel around, it helps save it. Bringing a woodcutter once in a while is much
cheaper than hiring someone to do it routinely and constantly.
How it is transported
There needs to be special transportation that can carry the weight of the wood
and the shape. Somethings that is made out of plastic will not be able to carry
such a large amount of wood, so they are transported using trains and Lorries.
The wood is not transported all the way from Scotland to Blackburn because the
drivers can get tired, such as it can cause pain and overall it is not good for the
health. And also there are traffic jams, so it will take a long time for it to be
transported, this affects the delivery time, and it will affect the reputation of the
business if the customers do not receive their goods on time. They use the
Lorries to get the wood from the growing side in Scotland to the train side. They
use trains because there is one driver which is cost effective because more drivers will cost more, and no
traffic jams so the train can go in a high speed. It is cost effective to use train for a large number of wood,
it can carry a lot of wood such as the amount 19 Lorries can carry, so it is more cost effective and quicker.
Another benefit is that Lorries are designed to carry logs, irregular/different sizes, so overall Lorries make
it more efficient to transport wood.
