SYNOPSIS

Motorcycle Offsetters, a burgeoning startup, aims to provide a platform for motorcycle enthusiasts to combat
climate change by offsetting their riding emissions. Despite rapid growth, financial sustainability eludes the
venture. The founder, Andreas Gneist, must devise a marketing strategy to engage organizations capable of
offering offsetting services to motorcycle enthusiasts. This involves overcoming negative perceptions of
n
carbon offsetting among skeptics—including environmental activists and climate change-denying enthusiasts.
tio
Gneist estimates that Motorcycle Offsetters would need to sell 10,000 metric tons of carbon offsets for the
company to be able to sustain itself financially. He has had some success in investigating other revenue
streams (including but not limited to commissions from sales generated through affiliated marketing
lu
initiatives) that can be developed and tapped to contribute to overall revenue. Gneist has set a one-year
target for the venture to reach financial sustainability. To achieve this Motorcycle Offsetters will need to

immediately develop and implement an effective marketing and communications strategy, increase revenue
from its selling of carbon offsets, and continue to develop and diversify a more robust set of supporting
product offerings and benefits.
OBJECTIVES
• Discuss marketing strategies that address the competing narratives of efficiency, effectiveness, and
ethicality in both support and opposition to the use of carbon offsetting as a tool to combat climate change.
• Articulate the ideological differences across elements of society with respect to the veracity of climate
change and its impacts.
• Describe the elements of a marketing communications plan needed to promote carbon offsets as an
intangible product with societal benefits.
• Develop strategies for revenue generation through diversification of product offerings/benefits.

,ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS
1. What are the ethical objections that Motorcycle Offsetters may face in marketing carbon offsetting as
a product that will assist society in reaching its net-zero carbon emissions targets?
2. Discuss the role of additionality in the determination of the effectiveness of Motorcycle Offsetters
carbon offsetting platform.
3. What are the benefits to Motorcycle Offsetters’ customers of purchasing voluntary carbon offsetting?
4. What are the concerns with respect to the effectiveness of carbon offsetting? How can Motorcycle
Offsetters address these concerns?
5. Describe the ideological challenges that Motorcycle Offsetters must overcome in promoting a product
designed to help address climate change. How do you suggest they address these challenges?
6. Evaluate Motorcycle Offsetters’ existing social media campaign.
7. Develop a three minute “elevator pitch” that could be used to describe/promote Motorcycle Offsetters.

,3. What are the benefits to Motorcycle Offsetters’ customers of purchasing voluntary carbon
offsetting?
The primary benefit to voluntary carbon offsetting for the consumer is the ability to offset the carbon produced
by their chosen activity (in this case motorcycle riding) by contributing to a project that either reduces other
carbon outputs or removes carbon from the atmosphere. The consumer is effectively contributing to the
societal goal of achieving net zero carbon production. Some see this as assuaging the guilt felt by consumers
that may accompany engaging in carbon producing pastimes. Research has found that individuals who
purchase carbon offsets tend to show a greater awareness of the impact of their activities on the environment
and often include carbon offsets as part of a broader portfolio of net-zero activities.2
Motorcycle Offsetter customers also receive advantages other than the environmental benefits from
offsetting the carbon produced by their touring activities. The case describes the benefits available to
customers in the form of reduced rates from participating hotels, discounts from motorcycle equipment and
apparel providers and manufacturers, and reductions in motorcycle club membership fees.
