--THE ORIGINS AND SPREAD OF ISLAM (p.321-333-

The universalizing faith of Islam expanded from the Arabian Peninsula across
Southwest Asia and North Africa through long-distance trade and expansion by
imperial politics, all-the-while, creating new debates about religion in society.

Islam started in Mecca, located in the remote Hijaz by a prophet
