QUESTION 1
A frame shown in Figure 1 consists of a fixed support at A and a pinned support at F.
The frame has point loads of 25 kN at B, 40 kN at D and a uniformly distributed load
of 10 kN/m at column EF. Using the moment distribution method calculate the moment
at all joints.

QUESTION 2
Consider the below portal frame in Figure 2 carrying loads V and H to which a load
factor k has been applied. Assume V = H = 1. Use moment distribution method to
program a Microsoft excel spread sheet to determine the load factor k that will cause
the frame to yield at various nodes. The plastic moment 𝑀𝑝 = 100 𝑘𝑁𝑚, E and I are
constant.

Procedure
• First do hand calculation using moment distribution method and calculate the
moment, shear, and axial force diagram.
Microsoft Excel.
• The hand calculations will help to setup or program. Define material properties
of the column and beam (e.g. elastic modulus (E), moment of inertia (I) and
length (L).
• Define load k which will be the same load acting at nodes B and C.
• Define the support conditions (Fixed or pinned).
