Balanced Compassionate Caring Model

A model to describe the way a clinician involves themselves with the patient. It is the emotional
involvement a clinician has with a patient, where it ranges from being emotionally detached to
being overly emotional. The sweet spot is the "zone of balanced compassionate care" and outside
the zone there are negative effects for both the clinician and the patient.

What does the Balanced compassionate care model look like

Why is the balanced compassionate care model important in a clinicians career?

It helps both the clinician and the patient. The patient will feel safer and have a better connection
with the clinician, as they will be more willing to share more with the clinician and therefore
result in a better diagnosis. The clinician is able to regulate their own emotions better and will
also lead to better care.

Caritas attitude, balanced notion of personal responsibility, Compassionate empathic concern v.
emotional detachment OR emotional engulfment, therapeutic perspective v. detached objectivity
(person centered), being centered, lifetime of caring as a story with a succession of awakenings,
and awareness and the use of the wound healer archetype

Caritas attitude - core driving force in helping relationships

It is used to capture the depth of what we want for our patients, it is better than love or care. It is
to cherish and give attention with charity, compassion, and generosity. It is characterized by a
loving and compassionate mindset and just genuinely wanting to help the patient.

Balanced notion of personal responsibility

Critical to being in the zone of balanced compassionate care from both the perspectives of the
clinician and the patient. If a patient feels a clinician is detached they can feel at risk. Also, if a
patient feels the clinician is overly involved this can give false hope. Ensure patients that they

, will do the best they can and are invested to help them. This is vital for a clinician's well being
and to avoid burnout and being detached.

Compassionate empathic concern v. emotional detachment OR emotional engulfment

Emotional detachment: Completely apathetic, leads to negative outcomes
Emotional engulfment: clinician too involved- leads to negative outcomes
Empathetic concern: balance between engulfment and detachment. Not too overly involved or
detached. Focus on experience of patient without losing a sense of oneself or becoming
emotional overwhelmed.

Therapeutic perspective v. detached objectivity (person centered)

Therapeutic perspective focuses on clinicians to not take patient dysfunctionality personally.
Know what patient is going through - helps us not get frustrated with difficult patients.
Detached objectivity is abandoning the problems of the patients and just becoming uncaring
towards the patient which can worsen care.

Being centered

Being calm, relaxed, not rushed or stressed. Feeling focused and emotionally collected that
allows us to take proper care of the patient. Emotionally present for the patient and put aside
personal concerns but will return to them later.

Life of caring as a story with a succession of awakenings

The journey through healthcare is a story. There will be ups and downs during the journey, like
clinical detachment, losing empathy and compassion, burnout, but we can regain it! Learn how
to frame the struggles as setbacks and grow from it.

Awareness and use of the wound-healer archetype

Physicians must acknowledge their own inner wounds and learn from them - everyone has
potential to heal. Having a wound doesn't mean you are a wounded healer! Work through them,
process them, only then you can be more empathetic and capable. The best teachers are those
that are always learning.
