THE COMPLETE SIFT AAIT EXAM WITH
ACCURATE SOLUTIONS
Fuselge - ANS-The body of the helicopter
The engine does.. - ANS-drives power upward through the mast to the rotor blades
The main rotor is used to.. - ANS-generate thrust
Thrust is balanced by.. - ANS-a second rotor, usually a tail rotor
Advantage of a helicopter over an airplane... - ANS-is its ability to takeoff vertical & its
ability to hover. They can also perform tasks such as popping cargo or troops into
challenging conditions.
Throttle control.. - ANS-By rotating the grip, the pilot is able to increase or decrease the
amount of power generated by the engine. The purpose of doing this is to ensure that
the helicopter has sufficient lift for flight to occur. In dual engine aircraft, there is a
separate throttle for each engine, usually taking form of a lever.
Four basic flight maneuvers: - ANS-- Straight and Level flight
- Turns
- Climbs and decent
- Hovering
Straight and Level flight - ANS-is when a helicopter moves at steady altitude and
heading. This is achieved by tilting the nose forward, increasing the speed at which the
helicopter moves. The lower the nose, the more power required.
Turns - ANS-are achieved by pushing the cycling in the desired turning direction. This
causes the rotor to tilt. The anti-torque and throttle controls are used in conjunction to
ensure altitude is maintained during the turn and process is smooth.
Climbs and decent - ANS-are achieved through manipulation of the collective. Moving
the collective manipulated the amount of lift, causing the helicopter to rise of fall as the
pilot desires.
Hovering - ANS-occurs when the pilot moves as minimally as possible at a constant
heading and altitude over a reference point.
, Helicopter Taxing - ANS-consists of either hover taxi, air taxi or ground taxi maneuvers.
Hover taxi - ANS-occurs at 25 feet or less AGL
Air Taxi - ANS-occurs at 100 feet or less and require the pilot to avoid flying over people
Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk - ANS-A four-bladed, single main rotor helicopter that was
interdicted in 1979. The black-hawk has the capacity to carry a combination of guns and
other weaponry including m240 Machine guns, M134 miniguns, Hydra-70 rockets and
the VOLCANO mine-field dispersal system. Heavily modified Blackhawks were used
during the raid that killed Bin Laden.
Boeing CH-47 Chinook - ANS-A twin engine, tandem rotor helicopter introduced in
1962. One of the fastest in the Army's fleet, with top speeds around 196 mpg. Primarily
used for heavy lifting purposes, such as transporting cargo or troops. Has seen action in
every main American war, from Vietnam through to Iraq & Afghanistan.
Boeing AH-64 Apache - ANS-A twin turboshaft attack helicopter introduced in 1986.
Equipped with 1200 rounds on M230 Chain gun. Carries a combination of Hydra-70 air
to ground rockets and AGM 114 Hellfire missiles. Has been used in every major conflict
since its introduction, including ISIS.
Bell OH058 Kiowa - ANS-A single engine, single main rotor introduced in 1969.
Typically used for observation, reconnaissance and support purposes.
Blades spin: - ANS-in a counterclockwise direction when powered on
Blades maximum airflow velocity: - ANS-3 o'clock
Blades minimum airflow velocity: - ANS-9 o'clock
Airfoil - ANS-is a surface that contributes to airlift generation by regulating airflow over
its upper and lower surface. In helicopters, horizontal stabilization is achieved by this
airfoil and maintained by the revolving blades of the rotating main rotor and the tail rotor.
Angle of Attack (AOA) - ANS-is a relative angle depending on the direction of motion of
the blade with respect to air and the chord line of an airfoil. For example, the angle
between the rotor blade and net wind passing through it.
Single Main Rotor Helicopter - ANS-Most common type of hell. A single main rotor
generators power, with a secondary rotor, such as a tail rotor, used to offset the effects
of torque.
Disadvantage is that some power is used for counteracting torque, rather than being
used solely for lift.
