Planning Instructional Strategies for Meaningful Learning

This program was designed using the principles of the science of
learning. These principles provide evidence-based insights into how
people gain and retain knowledge and are crucial in helping teachers
develop more effective teaching strategies. By knowing how the
brain works during learning, teachers can help students stay
interested and understand the material better, leading to better
results in school. It also helps tailor teaching to fit the different ways
that students learn best. The science of learning helps teachers
evaluate student work and diagnose and prescribe activities for
enhanced achievement.

Executive functioning in the brain is central to the science of
learning. Executive functioning helps learners plan what to do,
organize tasks, pay attention to what is important, remember things,
and manage time and space. It is what enables your future P–12
learners to figure out how to solve problems, make decisions, and
stay on track when they are learning something new or facing a
tricky situation. Having strong executive functioning skills will also
help you do well in this course, because it helps you stay focused,
manage your work, and handle challenges effectively.

,This program was also designed using spiraling curriculum. A
spiraling curriculum works by revisiting key concepts and skills at
increasing levels of complexity over time. This approach helps
reinforce learning, ensuring that

,you will build a deeper understanding and retain information
more effectively. Revisiting curriculum over time helps with your
encoding of new information, retrieval of previously learned
information, and storage of information for long-term
knowledge.
This course is part of the Professional Core (Pro-Core), shown in Figure
0.2 below. These courses will help you build a foundation of
knowledge of important concepts that will be revisited throughout the
rest of your courses. There are also four concept chunks—Learner and
Learning, Content, Instructional Practice, and Professional
Responsibilities—that will be interwoven in each level of the spiral.

, The concept of a spiraling curriculum, as illustrated in Figure 1.3,
recognizes that certain topics recur throughout the year through re-
teaching, but also throughout different grade levels, each time with
increasing complexity and depth. Figure 1.3 illustrates the concept of
spiraling curriculum. For example, teachers introduce U.S. History in
elementary school, go into more detail in middle school, and then
engage high school
