FIVE KINGDOM CLASSIFICATION
By: Ansh, Class 9
Acknowledgement:
I thank my teacher for guiding me through this assignment and my family for their support. I learned
a lot about the diversity of life and the way scientists classify living organisms.
Introduction:
Biological classification is the method of grouping organisms based on similarities and differences.
There are millions of organisms, so to study them easily, they are classified scientifically. Robert
Whittaker, in 1969, proposed the Five Kingdom Classification system.
Need for Classification:
- To organize vast biodiversity
- To understand evolutionary relationships
- To avoid confusion from local names
- To make the study of organisms easier
Criteria Used in Classification:
Whittaker used 5 key features:
1. Cell type - prokaryotic or eukaryotic
2. Body structure - unicellular or multicellular
3. Mode of nutrition - autotroph or heterotroph
4. Reproduction
5. Phylogenetic relationship
