Drought is one of the most serious environmental issues affecting southern Africa. It has
far-reaching effects on farming, water availability, food security, and people’s lives.
Although some drought patterns are natural and have occurred for centuries, scientists
are now seeing signs that climate change might be making them worse or more
unpredictable. In this report, I will explore what drought is, how it happens, and how
geography can help us understand and even predict it. I will use published scientific
research to explain how things like rainfall patterns, land use, satellite images, and
computer models are used to study drought. I’ll also look at whether these droughts are
just part of natural cycles or signs of bigger global environmental changes.
1. The Effectiveness of Geographic Characteristics, Tools and Techniques in
Predicting Drought (30 marks)
1.1 Geographic Characteristics
Geographic features such as rainfall distribution, vegetation cover, soil type, and
temperature help us understand how and where droughts occur. For instance, regions
like Botswana and Namibia already have low rainfall, so even small changes in climate
can lead to serious droughts (Masih et al., 2014).
1.2 Tools
Geographers and scientists use many tools to study drought. These include:
Remote Sensing: Satellites give real-time images showing where vegetation is
dying or where water is drying up. For example, NASA’s MODIS data helps
detect vegetation stress caused by lack of rain (Rembold et al., 2019).
