importance and controversy surrounding these organisations. While unions aim to
protect educators' rights, their actions especially strikes often draw criticism for
disrupting schooling. This essay evaluates the role of teacher unions in the democratic
era, using recent strike actions as a case study to explore their contributions and
limitations in shaping the education landscape in South Africa.
Issues That May Lead to Teacher Strikes
Teacher strikes are usually a response to unresolved grievances. One major issue is
inadequate salaries. Teachers often demand wage increases that reflect inflation and
match the cost of living. The gap between public and private sector earnings for
teachers is another concern. Secondly, poor working conditions, such as overcrowded
classrooms, lack of teaching resources, and unsafe school environments, contribute
significantly to discontent. Thirdly, policy disputes around curriculum changes,
performance assessments, or job security may also fuel tensions.
Administrative problems like delays in salary payments, unfulfilled promises regarding
promotions or housing allowances, and inadequate professional development
opportunities can further aggravate tensions. In some instances, larger socio-political
issues such as government budget cuts to education or corruption in education
departments trigger collective action.
