Developmental psych - -Description, explanation and prediction of age-related changes in behavior, thinking, emotions and social relationships. Identification of variables that influence development and explanation of how they work together to shape an individual's life. Supports development, e.g. through scaffolding to speed up development. Multi-disciplinary- mainly based in psychology but also draws on genetics and biology, neuroscience, anthropology, sociology and education. What is gained by taking a developmental stance? - --Important knowledge about the emergence, manifestation, consistency and change of specific psychological phenomena, (e.g. language, personality) across the life span. -Better understanding of when, how and why change occurs -Helps us understand normative and non-normative development- spot changes and concerns about development. Quantitative vs qualitative change - -Quantitative form = gradual increase in a characteristic Qualitative form = fundamental shift in behaviour or ability Continuity / discontinuity and stability vs instability in development - --Continuity / discontinuity = develop continuously throughout life gradually, e.g. intelligence, or occurs in distinct stages, e.g. an infant learning object permanence. Some characteristics are continuous, whilst others are discontinuous. -These characteristics can be seen in a group level, e.g. look at a group of 5 year-olds and observe them over time, or at an individual level, looking at their changes over time. -Stable vs instable = characteristics that either increase or decrease over time, e.g. height increases but memory capacity decreases, vs characteristics that can increase and decrease over time, e.g. weight. -Characteristics can be stable at a group level but not stable at an individual level, e.g. an individual's IQ increases over time but the groups IQ remains similar. -Freud said that a child's personality is solidified by age 5, but this has been highly disputed. Nature vs nurture in development - -Nature = hereditary causes of behaviour (those based on the genetic makeup of an individual that influence growth and development throughout life) PSYCHOLOGY PSYCHOLOGY Nurture = environmental causes of behaviour (the influence of parents, siblings, friends, schooling, nutrition etc.) Twin studies (start with the same genetic base) show nurture has some influence. Generally believed that development is the interaction between the two. Behaviour genetics - -The study of how variation in behaviour can be explained by separating environmental (shared, non-shared) and genetic influences, e.g. diet, stress influencing gene expression. Epigenetics - -The idea that experience can determine the turning on and off of genes Multi-level systems model development (Gottlieb, 1992) - -Levels of development that all influence one another- bidirectional influence in all layers. Levels are environment, behaviour, neural activity, genetic activity. Sensitive periods - --Organism is particularly susceptible to experience during specific periods in development, e.g. language development -Due to brain maturation and plasticity: brains very plastic at birth, becomes specialised as it gets older, e.g. .learning to drive. Piaget's stages of cognitive development - -1. Sensorimotor: 0-2 years. Infant explores world through direct sensory and motor contact. Object permanence and separation anxiety develop during this stage. 2. Preoperational: 2-6 years. Child uses symbols (words and images) to represent objects but does not reason logically. Has the ability to pretend. Egocentric during this stage. 3. Concrete operational: 6-12 years. Child can think about concrete objects logically and can thus add and subtract. Also understands conversation. 4. Formal operational: 12-adult. Adolescent can reason abstractly and think in hypothetical terms. Sensorimotor skill development age 2 - --In the second year of life, infants become confident in manipulating objects and can plan different movements to reach, grasp, catch and combine objects. -This is evidence of having acquired mental rotation of objects, anticipation of goal states, and understanding of means-end relationships. -As sensory loops are strengthened, we need less of them to complete an action. The infant will use the most important person as safe base, show proximity seeking behaviours, show separation anxiety and stranger weariness. 2+ years: internalised attachment experiences from internal working models of relationships Goal-corrected parnership (attachment) - -When infants are more able to express themselves, e.g. through language and think in more concrete terms, they can understand that other people have feelings, thoughts and needs other than themselves- meaning parent can negotiate with the child and they can understand why longer separations are needed -Language, cognitive advances, e.g. theory of mind, enable the child to weigh both the parent's and their own goals -Attachment needs can increasingly be negotiated collaboratively between parent and child -The behaviours enlisted by the attachment system are expected to change over the course of development, with, for example, distance interaction (incl. language) becoming more significant in toddlerhood than in infancy Variations in the quality of attachment - --The attachment system, according to Bowlby, Ainsworth and others, operates at the level of the goal-directed organization of attachment behaviour within the individual, and in a given context. -The emphasis thus is not on specific attachment behaviours, but on the patterning. -The distinction between attachment behaviours and the attachment behavioural system is fundamental to the operationalisation

Microgenetic measures - --Longitudinal study but examines more often, e.g. rather than
measuring height monthly, microgenetic measures would measure height every week.
-Examine changes as they occur
-Small samples but dense data collection- takes a lot of effort
-Provides valuable info about changes as they occur, e.g. some days a child wouldn't
grow at all but then the next day they do- more accurate account of growth

Sequential (cohort) designs - --Combines across sectional and longitudinal designs to
examine age related change across multiple cohorts
-E.g. takes groups of each age decade and measures them for a decade.
-E.g. measures 40 year olds until they are 50, but also measures 50 year olds until they
are 60 etc.
-Measures all ages for longitudinal times but not same people the whole time.

than 5-6 years
4. EEG and ERP- all measured brain activity vs event related activity. Good temporal
resolution and neural response. Difficulties with localisation
