Skin has 8 major functions: - ANS Protection: Stratum corneum protects the body from TEWL
and pathogens from entering the body; Sensation: 5 types of sensory nerve endings that
respond to heat, cold, pain, touch, and pressure; Temperature Regulation: Body maintains a
internal temperature of 37oC; Excretion: Water loss from sweat carries salt, other chemicals,
cellular waste, and toxins; Secretion: Sebum secretes from the sebaceous glands. The main
function is to lubricate the skin and hair, provide softness and suppleness, and protect against
bacterial invasion through the skin; Absorption; Immunity: Langerhan cells: Star-shaped
immune cells in the epidermis, involved in fighting inflammation; Metabolism: Dermis can
repair itself
Appearance Normal skin: - ANS Moist, soft, flexible, slight reaction to acidic substances, free
from diseases, disorders, or lesions; Skin is thin on eyelids, thick on the back, palms, and soles

,Epidermis - ANS Outermost layer of the skin, its main function is to act as a protective
covering for the body; No blood vessels, does have small nerve endings
5 Layers of epidermis - ANS 1. Stratum Corneum; 2. Stratum Lucidum; 3. Stratum
Granulosum: Keratin; 4. Stratum Spinosum; 5. Basal Layer
Basal layer - ANS Constantly dividing; Cell turnover takes 26-28 days; Contains Melanocytes:
Pigment producing cell; Melanin: A brown to dark brown or black pigment caused by
melanocytes
Dermis - ANS Has Connective tissue: Supports, connects, and binds together relevant
structures; Also called derma, corium, cutis or true skin; Contains, blood vessels, lymph vessels,
nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, arrector pili muscle
2 main layers of the dermis - ANS 1) Papillary (upper): Directly below the epidermis;
Melanocytes are found here. 2. Reticular (Deeper): Second layer of the dermis; Collagen and
Elastin fibers are here
Hypodermis: - ANS The adipose (fatty) tissue beneath the dermis; Main functions: Provide
energy, protection, gives smoothness and contour to the body; Known as subcutaneous layer
Nourishment - ANS The blood and lymph are what supplies the nourishment to the skin
Skin Types - ANS Classified by oil levels; Healthy skin - a slightly acidic surface (pH 5.5);
Normal; Dry - low oil; Combination: Normal to dry , Normal to oily; Oily - High oil
Acneic Skin: - ANS Disorder of the sebaceous glands where the glands are over-active and
secrete excess sebum; P. Acne is the bacteria for acne; Oil needs to present, and bacteria need
to be present for an infection to occur

, Dehydrated Skin: - ANS A condition that has a lack of moisture/water in the skin; Technical
name for dehydration is TEWL
2 types of dehydration: - ANS Superficial (epidermis) & Deep (dermis)
5 external factors that cause dehydrated skin - ANS UV rays; Not enough water consumption;
Smoking; Alcohol; Air pollution
Rosacea: - ANS A vascular disorder; Triggers: Hot and cold temperatures, alcohol, hot and
spicy food; UV rays are the most damaging to the capillaries ; Characteristics: Butterfly pattern
Sensitive Skin - ANS
Aging Skin - ANS Loss of skin firmness due to decreased collagen production; Loss of muscle
tone; Low sebum levels
Skin Disorders Terms: - ANS Symptoms: Signs of diseases 2 types: Subjective & Objective;
Erythema: Redness; Edema: Swelling
Golden Rule - ANS Never work on anything where one or more is present: 1. Inflammation,
erythema 2. Edema 3. Pain 4. Heat
Skin Lesions - ANS Lesion: Structural change in the skin from injury or disease; Primary lesion
& Secondary lesion; Pustule: Don't work on the pustule or area surrounding it
Acute Disease: - ANS Come on rapidly, manifested by symptoms from more/less violent
character, and gets better once treated
Chronic Disease: - ANS Long duration, usually mild, but recurring
