Change - Answer-Defined: it's a process where by an individual behavior, emotion, thought, or
perception moves from one point to another

has more reasons to change then to stay the same
Motivation Categories for Change - Answer-Punishment: behavior typically diminishes. Not helpful.
Don't want individuals to change because of fear
Reinforcement: defined - refers to the entire process when a behavior occurs and then is followed by a
reinforcer.
Intrinsic: act itself is enjoyable-most powerful
Extrinsic: enjoyment from the completion of an act
Extraneous: tangible reward-least powerful
, When changing behaviors both you & the client need a solid foundation of knowledge (rationales)
Foundation of Change - Answer-Focuses on the foundation on which all change occurs and the means
used to effect it
3 Components: minimal pain (should not be painful), gradual change (small steps), fragile nature of
change (new behaviors need constant attention)
Fragile Nature of Change - Answer-Rapid change is too frightening
New behaviors need constant attention or they disappear. Automatic nature of old behaviors adversely
affects the new behaviors
Activity Strategy - Answer-Practice is required for any kind of change, but not just any kind of practice
Use structure to facilitate success
3 basic procedures for activity construction so that client can achieve goals
3 Components of Activity Strategy - Answer-1) Activities need to be consistently practiced
2) need to be generalized
3) clients must be held accountable for their performance
Consistent practice will result in 3 things; 1) bringing undesirable automatic behaviors to a conscious
level 2) making newly developed behaviors automatic 3) it protects the fragility of new behaviors
Undesirable behaviors are often so ingrained you don't recognize them. With every practice session the
degree of automatic occurrence is increased
