, QUESTION ONE: DISCURSIVE ESSAY

“Academic misconduct, encompassing acts of plagiarism and cheating, has long been

a pressing concern within educational institutions. However, the emergence of artificial

intelligence (AI) technologies has brought forth a transformed landscape of academic

dishonesty, presenting novel challenges for educators.”

INTRODUCTION

Academic misconduct refers to any dishonest or unethical behaviour that gives a

student an unfair academic advantage or undermines the integrity of the educational

process. Academic misconduct, particularly plagiarism and cheating, has historically

undermined the integrity of education. Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation

of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think, learn, reason, and

solve problems in seconds.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI), while offering benefits to teaching and learning, has

also created new avenues for dishonest academic behaviour. These developments

challenge institutions to adapt their ethical standards and enforcement mechanisms

(Bretag, 2016). One major cause of academic misconduct involving AI is the easy

accessibility of AI tools like ChatGPT, paraphrasing apps, and content generators.

These technologies can produce essays, solve problems, with user input, making it

tempting for students to submit AI-generated work as their own (Cotton et al., 2023).
