CAPS stands for the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement. It is a guide
used in South African schools that helps teachers know what to teach, how to teach it,
and how to assess it. CAPS is important because it makes sure all schools follow the
same standard, so every child, no matter where they live, gets the same quality of
education.
1.2)
CAPS helps teachers by giving them a clear plan for their lessons. It tells them exactly
what topics to teach, how much time to spend on each topic, and how to check if
learners understand. For example, if a teacher is teaching Life Skills to Grade 5
learners, CAPS might say that they should spend 2 hours a week on Creative Arts, and
it will give ideas on what activities to do during that time. This makes teaching more
organised and helps the teacher not to feel lost or unsure.

Grades 4 to 6. It shows that subjects like Home Language and Mathematics take up the
