Exam 4 study guide pharmacology 1
What is the relationship with bph medications and meds that contain phenylephrine? (pg. 814)
The goal of treatment for patients with bph focuses on minimizing the urinary obstruction and
preventing complications.-
Certain frequently used medications can worsen symptoms of bph. Alpha-adrenergic drugs, which
Include decongestants such and phenylephrine, may activate alpha1-adrenergic receptors in the bladder
neck, restricting urine flow.
What is the relationship between antianginal medications and medications for erectile dysfunction,
what teaching would you provide for a patient that has angina and wants to take a medication for
erectile dysfunction ? (pg. 812)
The combination of nitrates ( one of the main classes of anti-angina meds) and medications for erectile
dysfunction (eg, viagra, cialis, levitra) is dangerous since the combination may produce a severe
decrease in blood pressure. Erectile dysfunction medications must be avoided while taking a nitrate
medication
*how is a hormonal contraception medication dosed if a woman misses a day of taking her
contraceptive pill?
if one dose is missed, two pills taken the following day around the usual time may provide adequate
contraception.
Black box warning for estridiol and norethindrone. What is the biggy ( pg. 788)
Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular adverse effects in women who are taking
hormonal contraceptives containing estrogen. This risk increases markedly with age (over age 35) and
with heavy smoking (more than 15 cigarettes per day).
Indications and contraindications for the use of estrogen containing drugs, what meds do these drugs
Decrease the effectiveness of? ( pg. 788)

Contraception- prevent pregnancy by preventing fertilization by inhibiting ovulation
contraindications-
Hormonal contraceptives (hc’s) are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular adverse
effects
& contraindicated in women with the following conditions: current or past history of thromboembolic
Disorders, stroke, or coronary artery disease; hypertension hepatic tumors; known or suspected
carcinoma of the breast, endometrium, or other estrogen-dependent tumor; abnormal uterine
bleeding; cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice with prior oral contraceptive use; known or
suspected pregnancy.
estrogen decreases the effectiveness of
May decrease the effects of warfarin, heparin, and certain other anticoagulants leading to possible
thromboembolic events.
Meds for erectile dysfunction, precautions, examples (pg. 812)
Prototype drug- sildenafil ( viagra)
Precautions
sildenafil is contraindicated in patients taking nitrates and in those with hypersensitivity to the drug. This
drug is contraindicated in patients with severe cardiovascular disease, recent mi, stroke, heart failure,
dysrhythmias, and in the presence of anatomic deformities of the penis.
Use with nitrates will result in hypotension. Protease inhibitors (ritonavir, amprenavir, others) will cause
increased sildenafil levels, which may lead to toxicity. Rifampin may decrease sildenafil levels, leading to
decreased effectiveness
Side effects of tamsulosin (flomax) ( pg.
ejaculatory dysfunction is 814) a
prominent side effect
Postural hypotension in the beginning of therapy
Additional side effects: headache, fatigue, and dizziness.
What precautions do women and older men need to take with the medication of testosterone,
Testosterone gel. ( pg. 809)
testosterone gel can be transferred to another person by skin-to-skin contact, causing virilization of
female contacts and fetal harm.
