Epistemology and “Thinking About Thinking”: A Critical Commentary

Epistemology, described by Auerswald (1996) as “thinking about thinking” (p. 1), invites
a critical reflection on how knowledge is defined, constructed, and validated. This
perspective transcends a mere academic inquiry; it challenges the foundational
assumptions of truth and understanding in psychology and related disciplines. This
essay critically examines the statement through the lenses of modernism,
postmodernism, and ecosystemic theory, while integrating African epistemology to
contextualize and diversify our understanding of knowledge systems.

Modernist Epistemology and Paradigms

Modernism, rooted in Enlightenment thinking, posits that objective reality exists
independently of human perception and can be known through empirical observation
and rational analysis (Neuman, 2014). The modernist paradigm is grounded in
positivism, where knowledge is discovered through systematic, scientific methods that
yield generalizable and often quantifiable results (Becvar & Becvar, 2018). Here, the
observer is assumed to be detached and neutral—able to uncover universal truths.

In psychology, modernist approaches manifest in behaviorism and cognitive
psychology, where human behavior is studied through experiments and statistical
analysis. Knowledge, within this paradigm, is cumulative and linear, reflecting a cause-
effect logic that seeks to predict and control phenomena.

However, critics argue that modernism’s reliance on objectivity and generalization
overlooks the subjective, cultural, and contextual aspects of human experience
(Gergen, 2009). This limitation sets the stage for postmodernist critiques.

Postmodernist Epistemology and Paradigms

Postmodernism challenges the assumptions of modernism by asserting that knowledge
is socially constructed, context-dependent, and pluralistic (Lyotard, 1984). The
postmodernist paradigm rejects absolute truths, emphasizing instead the role of
language, power, and cultural narratives in shaping what is accepted as “knowledge.”

In this view, knowledge is not discovered but co-created through discourse and
relationships. This aligns with constructivist and interpretivist paradigms in qualitative
research, which focus on meaning-making from the perspectives of those involved.

Postmodernist epistemology thus highlights the multiplicity of realities and foregrounds
marginalized voices often excluded by the dominant scientific discourse. It supports the
