Lasers chapter 6
argon laser - answer blue or green light beam, travels through clear fluid/tissue, used in
ophthalmic or cystoscopy surgery
Nd:YAG laser - answer solid crystal invisible beam, useful in clear fluid, requires cooling
system
Holmium (YAG) laser - answer flexible fiber delivery, useful in clear fluid, used in
arthroscopy/ cystoscopy surgery
carbon dioxide (CO2) laser - answer most common (least expensive), invisible beam,
NO clear fluid
Krpton laser - answer gas, red light most used, used for eyes (retina)
excimer laser - answer excellent precision, ultraviolent in color, gases in unit VERY toxic
and fatal, risk for UV radiation, very large
laser head - answer contains the media with the mirrors at either end
electromagnetic spectrum – answer radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible
light, ultraviolet light x-rays, and gamma rays
energy pump - answerexcitation with electrical energy, chemical energy, or flash lamps
delivery system - answeris the articulated arm, fixed optical array or fiber
tissue effects - answerabsorption, reflection, or transmission
laser beam characteristics - answermonochromatic, collimated, fluence, coherent
