1. Humboldt penguins are a species of penguin that inhabit the coastal areas of Chile. Due to their
declining population numbers, conservation biologists have implemented a mark-release-recapture
program to assess the effectiveness of conservation efforts.
(a) Define what is meant by the term ‘species’. (2)
In the first round of their study, the conservation biologists captured and marked 42 penguins. After
allowing some time for these penguins to reintegrate into their colony, a second round of sampling
was conducted, where 60 penguins were captured, including 17 that were previously marked.
(b) Suggest why it was important that the penguins reintegrated into their colony. (2)

(d) Describe conservation strategies that could be used to protect Humboldt penguins in their
