Grade 10 Physics - Waves
1. What are Waves?
Waves are vibrations that transfer energy from one place to another. They do not transfer matter!
Examples:
- Light
- Sound
- Water waves
- Seismic waves
2. Types of Waves
A. Mechanical Waves - Need a medium (e.g., sound, water)
B. Electromagnetic Waves - Do NOT need a medium (e.g., light, X-rays)
Two Main Types:
- Transverse Waves: Particles move perpendicular to wave motion (e.g., light)
- Longitudinal Waves: Particles move parallel to wave motion (e.g., sound)
3. Wave Properties
Key parts of a wave:
- Wavelength ((lambda)): Distance between two crests or troughs
- Frequency (f): Number of waves per second (measured in Hz)
- Amplitude: Height of the wave
- Speed (v): How fast the wave moves (v = f x (lambda))
