A. Examine a hospital that has significance to you and complete the following:

, 1. Identify the hospital you selected from the Care Compare website (found below in “Web Links”),
including the name and location (city, state).
The hospital I have chosen from the Care Compare website is St. Peter’s Hospital, located in Albany,
New York.
2. Explain why you chose the hospital in part A1 and what significance it has to you, including a
specific example.
The reason I chose St. Peter’s Hospital is because that is where I attended nursing school. I also used to
work there.
3. Using the Care Compare website, identify the “type of facility” of the hospital you chose in part
A1.
a. List the medical services provided at the facility.
St. Peter’s Hospital is an acute care hospital. The services they provide include addiction services,
bariatric and metabolic care, behavioral health, breast care, cardiology, colon and rectal care,
endocrinology, family medicine, general surgery, heart surgery, hepatobiliary and pancreatic
surgery, infectious disease, internal medicine, mammography, medical oncology, midwifery,
minimally invasive surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, palliative care,
pediatrics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, primary care, family and internal medicine,
pulmonary, radiation oncology, sleep medicine, speech therapy, thoracic and esophageal
surgery, urology, and vascular care.
4. Summarize the three main types of control/ownership for healthcare structures:
• for profit: A for profit organization must pay taxes in addition to generating a return for the
investor. For profit organizations depend on investors financially, this enables for-profit
hospitals to provide a broader range of services. Additionally, they provide the community with
more profitable services, however this does not adversely impact their quality of care. These
institutions can invest their assets in a variety of healthcare options. Although they are for-
profit, these hospitals still support the community through charitable causes.
• non-profit: A non-profit organization does not have to pay taxes and serves the greater good of
the community. They do have to submit proof on tax forms that their work is benefiting the
community. Donations to these organizations are often tax deductible and they are tax exempt.
In these organizations profit is not distributed among members or owners, it is reinvested into
the organization. Non-profit organizations depend on funding from donations, sponsorships,
grants, revenue from programs, and government funding.
• governmental: A governmental organization is established by the government. These
organizations are developed by conventions or treaties. Governmental organizations often
coordinate internationally. Often these organizations are non-profit. Government funded
hospitals are operated by the government on a federal, local, or state level. Government funded
hospitals are funded by taxpayer money. These institutions especially are accessible to
underserved groups of people.
5. Discuss the overall star rating from the Care Compare website for the hospital you chose in part A1,
including the following:
• selected hospital’s overall star rating (If the hospital does not have an overall star rating, explain
why.)
• how the rating impacts the hospital (e.g., financials, provided services, employee retention)
St. Peter’s Hospital’s overall star rating is 4 stars.
