Due Date: 3 July 2025

Section A: Short Answer Questions

1. Define what 'context' means in research. (2 marks)

In research, 'context' refers to the setting, background, or environment in which a study
takes place. It includes all the external factors that can affect the research process,
such as where the study is being done, who is involved, what time period it’s in, and
what cultural, economic, or political factors might be influencing the people or topic
being studied.

2. Why is understanding ‘context’ in research important? (8 marks)

Understanding context in research is important because it helps the researcher make
sense of what is happening in the environment where the study takes place. For
example, the way people behave or respond to questions can be influenced by their
culture, their history, or their social and political situations. If a researcher ignores these
aspects, they might misinterpret the results.

Context helps ensure that the research is not done in a vacuum. When researchers
understand the background of the people they are studying, they can ask better
questions, choose the right methods, and make sense of the findings in a way that
reflects real life. Without understanding context, research can be shallow, biased, or
even harmful, especially if it makes incorrect assumptions about people’s lives or
experiences.

, 3. How does understanding context improve the validity and reliability and/or
trustworthiness of research findings? (8 marks)

When a researcher understands the context, they can design their study in a way that
fits the reality of the participants. This makes the research more valid because the
findings truly represent what is going on in that setting.

It also helps with reliability or trustworthiness, especially in qualitative research. If the
context is known and described clearly, then others can understand how and why
certain results came about. This allows them to judge whether the results can apply to
similar situations or not.

For example, if you know that a study was done in a community facing poverty and
unemployment, you’ll understand why certain answers were given in interviews. This
level of detail makes the research more honest and dependable, and people are more
likely to trust the results.

4. Examples of how historical, socio-economic, political and cultural contexts can
influence the interpretation of research findings. (10 marks)

 Historical context: If you’re researching attitudes toward education in South
Africa, it’s important to remember the history of apartheid and how it affected
access to schooling. People’s experiences today are still shaped by that history.
 Socio-economic context: A study on healthcare access in a poor community
will show different results compared to a wealthy one. Lack of money, transport,
and education all affect how people use healthcare services.
 Political context: If research is being done in a country with political instability or
strict government control, people might be afraid to speak openly. Their answers
may be cautious or not fully truthful because of fear of consequences.
 Cultural context: In some cultures, people may not feel comfortable discussing
certain topics, like mental health or gender roles. If a researcher doesn’t
