AS AQA BIOLOGY MTA - THE HEART
AND CHD EXAM QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS
In this person, the stroke volume is 70cm3. Calculate cardiac output. - ANSWER-
5250
Use information from the graph to complete part a. Place 1,2,3,4 in appropriate box -
ANSWER-SL Valves opens at 2 and closes at 3
AV valves open at 4 and closes at 1
Use the diagram to above to calculate the volume of blood pumped per minute by
left ventricle. - ANSWER-between 6135.79 to 6400
Explain the role of the heart in the formation of tissue fluid. - ANSWER-The
ventricles contract which produces high hydrostatic pressure, forcing water and
some dissolved substances out of blood capillaries.
Suggest how a blockage in the lymphatic system could cause lymphoedema. -
ANSWER-Excess tissue fluid build up
Which blood vessel carries oxygenated blood away from the heart?
Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood to the heart? - ANSWER-C
A
Explain the highest blood pressure is produced in the left ventricle - ANSWER-
Strongest contractions.
Some babies are born with a hole between right and left ventricles. These babies are
unable to get enough oxygen to their tissues. Suggest why: - ANSWER-The blood
flows from the left ventricle to right ventricle. Lower volume of oxygenated blood
leaves left ventricle.
Some people produce a much higher ventricular blood pressure than normal. This
can cause tissue fluid to build up outside blood capillaries of these people. -
ANSWER-More fluid is forced out of capillary due to high pressure. Less return of
fluid into capillary due to the pressure.
Suggest how widening of blood vessels can reduce ventricular blood pressure. -
ANSWER-Larger volume of blood vessels. The blood pressure reduced in blood
vessels.
