Question 1 – Short Answer Questions (20 Marks) Each question carries five
marks. Suggested length: ±120 words per question. 1.1 Think about your
personal experiences of living in a community. In what ways does the idea of
Ubuntu shape how people in your community treat and help one another? (5
marks)

1.1 The idea of Ubuntu—“I am because we are”—deeply shapes how people in my community
relate to and support one another. Ubuntu promotes values such as compassion, mutual respect,
and solidarity. For example, when a family experiences hardship, neighbours come together to
offer food, emotional support, or even financial assistance, without expecting anything in return.
Community events like weddings, funerals, or traditional ceremonies are collective efforts,
where everyone contributes in some way. Elders are respected and their wisdom is shared with
younger generations, reinforcing the importance of interconnectedness. Ubuntu teaches that an
individual’s well-being is tied to the well-being of others, and this encourages a strong sense of
responsibility for each other’s welfare. It fosters harmony, cooperation, and a spirit of unity.

In my experience living in Nairobi, the spirit of Ubuntu is evident in various ways, shaping how
people interact and support each other within our communities.

One notable aspect is the strong sense of communal support. When a family faces difficulties,
such as a medical emergency or a bereavement, neighbors and extended family members readily
come together to offer financial assistance, emotional support, and practical help like preparing
meals or taking care of children. This aligns with the Ubuntu principle that a person is a person
through others, emphasizing our interconnectedness.
