Monopolizing member a member dominates the conversation in a group & do not allow
other members a chance to verbally participate; monopolizers initially offer other group
members relief b/c they focus attention on themselves & away from everyone else
silent member May or may not become involved w/the group. Sometimes silences is used to
cover hostility, sometimes not. often nonassertive, reflective, shy or just slow in assessing their
thoughts & feelings; best way to determine meaning of silence is to give a person a chance to
respond to a question & notice what happens
resistant member Often angry or frustrate & bring these feelings w/them to the group; they
do not participate in group exercises or tasks & act as barriers to helping the group form
Sarcastic member Users of sarcasm mask their feelings through the use of clever language
that has a biting humor. Leader can help the sarcastic member work on expressing anger
directly.
Universality A feeling of commonness with other members; brings cohesion to the group.
Members will more likely take risks
Joining the process by which members connect w/ one another psychologically & physically.
Requires that leaders & members exert some effort to meet & find out more about each other.
Most common way is for members to introduce themselves, stating their names & some brief
background information
Goals specific objectives that an individual or the group wishes to accomplish.

Executive Function leaders manage the group as a social system that allows the group and
its members to achieve specific goals; leaders remind the group periodically what it has done &
what it is doing in regard to agreed-on goals formulated earlier
Holding the focus Helping members concentrate on a specific topic or person for a set
length of time
Interviewing/screening group members Intake interviews. The group leader must determine
the level of interpersonal behavior or comfort w/others that potential group members have.
The goal is to determine whether a particular group is right for a particular person & processes
at a specific time. It helps avoid premature termination while goals & processes involved w/the
group are clarified & members are empowered to take an active part in the group

Nonverbal INTRApersonal experiences Intrapersonal exercises are those in which are done
alone at first and then shared & explored w/others at a later time. They include private,
personal experiences. A low-intensity nonverbal intrapersonal exercise would be what is known
as body relaxation; where the leader would talk members through relaxing parts of their body
starting w/the feet & ending w/the head. Members eyes would be closed the whole time
