Climate Change and Its Impact

Climate Change and Its Impact

Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century. It refers to the

long-term alteration of temperature and typical weather patterns in a place. While climate variation is

a natural phenomenon, the rapid changes witnessed today are primarily driven by human activities,

especially the emission of greenhouse gases due to industrialization, deforestation, and extensive

use of fossil fuels.

The primary indicator of climate change is global warming - the steady increase in Earth's average

surface temperature. According to scientific data, the planet's temperature has risen by about 1.1°C

since the late 19th century. This increase may seem negligible, but it has far-reaching

consequences for ecosystems, sea levels, and weather systems.

One of the major impacts of climate change is the increase in frequency and intensity of extreme

weather events. Heatwaves, floods, droughts, and hurricanes have become more common and

severe. For instance, the catastrophic floods in Pakistan in 2022 and the recurring wildfires in

Australia and California are direct consequences of changing climate patterns.

Sea-level rise is another critical consequence of climate change. Melting glaciers and polar ice caps,

combined with the thermal expansion of seawater, contribute to rising sea levels. This threatens

low-lying coastal regions, leading to land loss, increased salinity, and displacement of millions of

people. Island nations like the Maldives and Tuvalu face existential threats due to these changes.

Climate change also disrupts biodiversity and ecosystems. Many species are unable to adapt to
