Debridement of wounds may be completed in four different ways. In sharp, a scalpel or scissors
is used to separate and remove dead tissue. Special training is required for this sharp debridement
and must be performed by a wound ostomy continence nurse. Mechanical is performed using a
scrubbing force or damp-to-damp dressings. Agents such as collagenase enzymes are most
recommended in chemical debridement. Hydrocolloid and clear absorbent acrylic dressings trap
wound drainage against eschar, causing the body's own enzymes to break down necrotic tissue in
autolytic debridement. The most selective debridement is autolytic and it takes longer than the
rest but is the most preferred method causing the least damage to healthy surrounding and
healing tissues.
