1.Define the terms food and food habits. How does the omnivore’s paradox influence a person’s food choices and food habits? Food is anything that is consumed for the purpose of providing nutrition. Accordingly, “it is any substance that provides the nutrients necessary to maintain life and growth when ingested”1. How humans and animals consume food is different in that humans eat while animals feed. Human eating is distinguished from animal feeding by the way human beings use food. This process of using food; i.e. its acquisition, selection, preparation, distribution, and eating mannerisms, is called food habits.

Activity 1: Week 1

Chapter 1 – answer these questions while/after reading the chapter.

1.Define the terms food and food habits. How does the omnivore’s paradox influence a

person’s food choices and food habits?

Food is anything that is consumed for the purpose of providing nutrition.

Accordingly, “it is any substance that provides the nutrients necessary to maintain life and

growth when ingested”1. How humans and animals consume food is different in that humans

eat while animals feed. Human eating is distinguished from animal feeding by the way

human beings use food. This process of using food; i.e. its acquisition, selection, preparation,

distribution, and eating mannerisms, is called food habits.

Being omnivorous, human beings consume and digest a wide variety of plants and

animal products obtained from designed or wild surroundings. No single plant or animal

product can provide the necessary nutritional value to humans entirely. Accordingly, human

beings have to eat a combination of different foods in order to survive. But because not

everything is edible (some are poisonous and dangerous) humans have to select what they eat

carefully. The omnivore’s paradox is the situation where humans must eat a wide variety of

food but at the same time remain constantly careful not to eat the wrong food. This influences

a person’s food choices and habits because, as expected, most people choose what they

already know. In instance, where they have to try new foods then they might limit the amount

they eat or eat with extreme caution than they do their usual food.

2.List four factors that may influence an individual’s choice of foods. Pick one and

explain how this factor influences food choices.

- Cost

- Taste

- Wellbeing
