 Ability to perform duties depend on public cooperation

 Police’s duty is to impartially serve the law
 Police are citizens in uniform, paid to do full time what all citizens do
 Embedded in police’s code of conduct
 Policing relies on support from the public
 Important emphasis on the police being public servants who need to
maintain and respect the public

Aims of the police

 Bring offenders to justice
 Protect life and property
 Prevent defect and investigate crime
 Keep peace and maintain order

• 2010/11 to 2018/19: During this period, overall police funding
decreased by approximately 19% nationally. This reduction varied by
region, with Surrey experiencing an 11% decrease and Northumbria a
25% decrease.
• 2019/20 to 2023/24: Funding levels began to rise, with public
spending on police services increasing from £18.68 billion in 2019/20
to £27.34 billion in 2023/24. This represents a 46% increase over the
five-year period.
