Question 1

1.1 Describe the concepts community work and community. (4 marks)

Community refers to a group of people who share something in
common, such as a geographical location, interests, identity, values, or
social ties. Communities can form naturally (such as neighborhoods) or
be created around specific causes or interests (such as online gaming
communities or support groups). In essence, a community is bound
together by relationships and a sense of belonging.

Community work, on the other hand, is a method of social work aimed
at empowering communities to address their own needs, solve problems,
and develop by enhancing participation, cooperation, and self-reliance. It
involves organizing collective action, promoting social justice, and
building the capacities of community members to create change in their
lives and environments.

In short:

 Community = people connected by shared ties.
 Community work = helping communities identify, organize, and
address their collective needs through empowerment and
participation.

, 1.2 Describe the five types of communities. (8 marks)

1. Geographical Communities (Communities of Place)
These are based on a specific physical location such as a
neighborhood, town, or village. Members are connected primarily
by living in the same area.
Example: A rural farming village.
2. Functional Communities (Communities of Interest)
These communities are formed around a shared interest, function,
or goal, rather than location.
Example: Environmental advocacy groups or professional
associations.
3. Cultural Communities
Cultural communities arise from shared heritage, traditions,
language, ethnicity, or religion.
Example: The Zulu nation in South Africa or the Jewish
community globally.
4. Psychological Communities (Communities of Attachment)
These are formed through a strong sense of emotional connection
or shared identity among members, even if they are geographically
dispersed.
Example: LGBTQ+ communities or survivors of a particular event
forming a support network.
5. Virtual Communities
With advances in technology, virtual communities have emerged,
where people connect through digital platforms rather than in-
person interaction.
Example: Online forums like Reddit groups or Facebook
communities.

Each type of community influences how community work is
approached, depending on factors like connectivity, communication
methods, cultural background, and resource availability.
