Major Tenets of the Instructional Strategy
TAGteach (teaching with acoustical guidance) is a behavioral strategy in which an
acoustical stimulus is delivered as a conditioned reinforcer that is contingent upon the correct
presentation of a target behavior (Elmore et al., 2018). It is a form of shaping that focuses on
reinforcing desired behaviors rather than punishing undesired behaviors. In this method,
immediate feedback is given for every improvement of behavior (Vargas, 2020). Rather than
yelling at the unchanged behavior, a clicker (acoustical stimulus) is sounded immediately
following the correct performance of the next improvement of the behavior (Vargas, 2020).
TAGteach is sometimes referred to as clicker training (Cannon & Gould, 2022). It is a
behavior-analytic method used to enhance performance through immediate feedback in the form
of a clicking noise (Cannon & Gould, 2022). It has been suggested to be a non-intrusive,
efficient, and socially acceptable method of improving correct responses or behaviors (Cannon &
Gould, 2022).
, Vargas (2020) gives a good example of TAGteach in which a coach uses the clicker
sound as reinforcement for the improvement of behavior. Where most coaches would yell aloud
where improvement is needed, Vargas explains that the deliverance of the request of the change
of behavior, followed by the immediate click following the improved behavior yielded better
results. For example; instead of yelling “stop bending your arm”, the coach can say “straighten
your arm” and then reinforce (with the clicker) the next improved behavior. The sound of the
clicker is reinforcement for the improved behavior (Vargas, 2020).
Behavior Principles and Analytic Theories
Consequence controls behavior, and reinforcement increases or strengthens that behavior,
making it more likely to occur in the future (Vargas, 2020). Studies have suggested both positive
