Medical records have been around for centuries. In the early years they were for
educational purposes. As time has gone on, they now serve for much more. Insurance companies,
legal procedures and the healthcare team uses them most for detailed histories of our patients
(Lorkowski & Pokorski, 2022). Through time we have used walls, rolls, paper and now
technology. Technology can do so much more than just keep records but to also help in all forms
of patient care and the healthcare processes.
Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist
Nursing informatics is defined as " the integration of nursing science, computer science
and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom
in nursing”(American Nurses Association, 2023). In simple terms it’s things like our electronic
medical record, or our patient monitor equipment. The ability to predict patient outcomes,
telemedicine visits. Virtual apps that make it easier for patient’s to communicate with their
providers. It not only reduces errors and gives objective data to be able to better care for our
patients but also gives the ability to be in touch with them. There truly are endless possibilities.
The nurse informaticist is a nurse who has taken this to be their specialty. Much like how
there are intensive care nurses or ER nurses. This person has an understanding of nursing and
technology (American Nurses Association,2023). They help with how nurses on the floor use the
technology and improvements of software that is already in use. A nurse informaticist could be a
consultant, a project manager, or a director. This group of people usually have a bachelors in
nursing at the minimum, some have a masters. They also have taken the time to earn their
certification. Their average salary is ranges between $70,000 to $117,120 per year based on
experience.(Nursing Informatics: Where Nursing and Technology Coincide, 2022)
