NURS-FPX4040: Managing Health Information and Technology
Introduction: Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators
Welcome new nurses! Congratulations on your nursing journey. I am here to support
your career by introducing you to one important aspect of nursing. My name is Racquel Aniag
and I am part of the Quality Improvement Council and would like to stress the importance of
nursing-sensitive quality indicators. They are endorsed by the National Database of Nursing-
Sensitive Quality Indicators (NDNQI®) . We will explore your role in making sure the nursing-
sensitive quality indicators are upheld and how they affect patients.
What is the National Database of Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators?
The National Database of Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators (NDNQI®) is the only
national database that evaluates nursing care at the unit level quarterly and annually by
evaluating the reports of the structure, process and outcome indicators. It was established in 1998
by the American Nurses Association to collect data and develop better comprehension of quality
, nursing care. Because of their efforts, the NDNQI® has utilized its nursing-sensitive outcomes in
promoting better quality patient care overtime. According to the NDNQI® ,“the nursing’s
foundational principles and guidelines identify as a profession, nursing has a responsibility to
measure, evaluate, and improve practice.”
What is Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators?
Nursing-sensitive quality indicators form several guidelines that are used daily by nurses
by monitoring any changes in a patient’s health that a nurse can directly affect (Afaneh, 2021).
By having measurable data, these indicators enhance quality care outcomes. Monitoring and
learning from adverse events in healthcare can improve patient safety by decreasing the
likelihood of errors. Examples of nursing-sensitive indicators are nurse turnover rates, rates of
hospital acquired infections and the process and outcome of restraints usage.
