Nursing Informatics in Healthcare
Within nursing there are many specialties, one of which is nursing informatics. Nursing
informatics is an area of nursing that seeks to integrate clinical and technological elements into a
cohesive whole to promote efficient communication and maintain patient safety as the top
priority. Nurses are heavily reliant on informatics; they are constantly utilizing patient care
technologies and information technologies and information management; therefore, nurses must
be proficient in using these technologies. Additionally, nurses and other health care workers
must understand the ways in which informatics in healthcare can improve patient care.
Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticists
A nursing informaticist is a nursing specialist that can also carry the title of clinical
informatics specialist. “These individuals can have a range of responsibilities, anything from
implementing new systems that will create more organization and protection for clinical data, to
connecting with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals on the latest technologies that
are available”. The data that is managed in this role includes health care records, patient
information, along with other vital information that can assist with care and medical research
(Nam, 2023).
Nursing Informaticists are able to provide the essential task of describing the reasons
behind new procedures and systems and introducing them to the healthcare teams. Nurse
Informaticist are also the ones to verify that data is accurate and ensure a secure delivery into
current healthcare systems.
