PSTAT 5ls MIDTERM 1 TEST
Data - ANSWER set of observations
How to chart categorical data - ANSWER bar graphs and pie charts
How to chart quantitative data - ANSWER histograms, dotplots, stemplots
Two types of data - ANSWER categorical (qualitative) and quantitative
Statistics - ANSWER the science of data
Population - ANSWER entire collection of all the individuals (scores, people,
measurements, etc.) to be studied
Sample - ANSWER a group of members chosen from a population
Parameter - ANSWER a numerical value that describes some population
characteristic
Population - ANSWER -----> parameter
, Statistic - ANSWER a numerical value that describes some sample
characteristic
Sample - ANSWER -----> statistic
Individuals - ANSWER the things described by a collection of data, could be
people, animals, or objects
Variable - ANSWER any characteristic of a person, has different values for
different persons
Outlier - ANSWER data points which do not belong to the overall pattern of a
distribution
How to build a stem plot - ANSWER put each observation into a stem, which
is all but the rightmost digit, and a leaf, which is that last remaining final digit.
Put stems in a vertical column with the smallest value at the top and draw a
vertical line at the right of this column, then put each leaf in the row to the right
of its stem, in increasing order out from the stem
Dot plot - ANSWER every individual in the data set represented as some dot
on the x axis that's a measure of the size of the variable. Individuals with
identical value are marked vertically on the same spot.
Line graphs - ANSWER time plots: time on x axis and one is interested
variable on y axis
Mean - ANSWER measure of center:
