´ Most common eye disease comprised of inflammation of
the mucous membrane that lines surface of eyeball and
inner eyelids.
´ Acute or chronic
´ Most cases are viral or bacterial
´ Mode of contact: fingers, towels, handkerchiefs etc.É..person
to person
´ Other causes include keratoconjunctivitis sicca, allergy,
chemical irritants and deliberate self harm

Conjunctivitis
´ Adenovirus most common
cause
´ Bilateral disease
´ Copious watery discharge
´ Marked foreign body
sensation
´ Follicular conjunctivitis
´ Spreads easily
´ Eye clinics and swimming
pools may be infectious

´ Adenovirus 8,19, 37 is usual cause of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis
(Severe Viral Form)
´ Lasts 2 weeks; may result in vision loss due to subepithelial infiltrates
´ Adenovirus 3,4,7,11 is usually associated with
´ Pharyngitis, fever, malaise and preauricular adenopathy
(pharyngoconjunctival fever)
´ HSV conjunctivitis
´ Unilateral with lid vesicles
´ Enterovirus 70 or coxsackievirus A24
´ Hemorrhagic conjunctivitis
