Basic Life Saving (BLS)
Why is CPR important? - ANS-The majority of sudden cardiac arrests occur in public or at
home. If CPR is performed before EMS arrive an individuals chance of survival is about 40%
which is considerably higher than if they don't. the survival rate of Sudden Cardiac Arrests is
only 10% in general and may have to due to the fact that most individuals do not get CPR
before EMS arrive.
What is the rate of CPR chest compressions? Is that the same for both infants, children, and
adults? - ANS-100-120 bpm (about the beat to "staying alive"). Yes.
What is the rate of rescue breathing in adults, children and infants? - ANS-A breath every 5-6
seconds for adults and children, but with infants it is one breath every 3-5 seconds.
What changes are there in CPR for children and infants vs adults? - ANS-The rate of rescue
breathing for infants is faster than adults and children. The AED and its placement may vary for
children and infants. For infants, compressions should be done with two fingers or with thumbs.
While performing chest compressions what precautions should you have? - ANS-○ Press down
only with the palm of your hand on the center of the lower sternum/chest bone. Placing weight
other than their can cause ribs to break worse than they may already, or not cause adequate
blood perfusion.
○ Do not press over xiphoid process (bottom of sternum/chest bone). It can break off and
damage vital organs.
○ Press down to the appropriate depth. Straighten arms and lean over to use your body weight
to prevent fatigue.
○ Let chest rocoil all the way to allow heart to fill completely before compressing again.
○ Its best to perform on bare skin. The individual will be better prepared to receive an AED,
breathing will be easier to see, and you decrease the risk of injury from items such as buttons.
What is the depth CPR should be preformed for adults, children, and infants? - ANS-It should be
1/3 the depth of their chest. That is roughly 2.5 inches for adults, 2 inches for children, and 1.5
inches for infants.
For CPR purposes what determines if an individual is an adult vs a child or infant. - ANS-An
adult is anyone who has gone through puberty (underarm/chest hair for boys or breasts fro
girls). Children is anyone over a year that has not undergone puberty. An infant is anyone under
a year old.
What is the protocol for performing one person CPR? - ANS-1) Check to see if the scene is
safe.
2) Check responsiveness and vitals, pulse and breathing, for no more than 10 seconds.
3) Activate Emergency response if there is no responsiveness or vitals detected.
