CH.7 Basic Life Support
Good Samaritan Law - ANS-This law deals with the rendering of first aid by health care
professionals at the scene of an accident or sudden injury. It encourages health care
professionals to provide medical care within the scope of their training without fear of being
sued for negligence
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - ANS-a life-saving first-aid procedure that combines
rescue breaths with chest compressions, supplying oxygen to the body until normal body
functions can resume
sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) - ANS-a sudden stopping of the heartbeat, which may cause death
Chain of survival - ANS-refers to a series of actions that, when put into motion, reduce the
mortality associated with cardiac arrest
head tilt-chin lift maneuver - ANS-a procedure for opening a blocked airway in which a patient's
head is tilted back and the chin is lifted
circulation, airway, breathing (CAB) - ANS-the first steps to CPR
chest compressions - ANS-controlled and repeated application of pressure to the sternum of a
victim of cardiac arrest to keep the supply of oxygen moving throughout the body
automated external defibrillator (AED) - ANS-Small, portable device that can accurately identify
need, analyze rhythm, alert the rescuer, and provide the necessary shock through electrode
pads adhered to the victim's chest.
obstructed airway maneuver - ANS-Quick upward thrust performed against a patient's abdomen
while standing behind a patient to remove an obstruction and open a free passage of air from
the mouth or nose to the lungs.
