Basic Life Support
What is the leading cause of death in the US and Canada? - ANS-Sudden cardiac arrest
How fast does CPR need to be started after a person stops breathing? - ANS-4-6 minutes
What does CPR stand for? - ANS-Cardio (heart) Pulmonary (lung) Resuscitation (revive,
revitalize)
What is the purpose of CPR? - ANS-Maintain a flow of oxygenated blood to the brain and the
heart
To be covered by the Good Samaritan Laws, what must apply? - ANS-- Any first aid or
assistance provided cannot be in exchange for any type of reward or financial compensation.
You cannot charge, or provide help by trading goods or services.
- If a responder begins rendering aid, that person must not leave the scene until it is necessary
to call for needed medical assistance, unless someone of equal or higher ability takes over or if
continuing to give aid becomes unsafe.
- The responder is not legally liable for the death, disfigurement, or disability of the victim as
long as the responder acted rationally, in good faith, and in accordance with their level of
training.
What is the proper removal of contaminated gloves? - ANS-- Grab the palm of a gloved hand
with the fingers of the other gloved hand
- Carefully pull off the glove away from the palm of the hand and forward, removing the glove
inside out
- Wad up the removed glove in the gloved hand
- Slide your ungloved index finger inside the wrist area of the gloved hand
- Carefully pull away from the hand removing the glove inside out
- Throw away the gloves in a hazardous material container and wash your hands with soap and
water
What are the emergency action steps of CPR? - ANS-- Check - Call - Care
How old is a person to give adult CPR to? - ANS-8
What do you do if an unconscious person is breathing normally? - ANS-Place them in the
recovery position and monitor their breathing
,Where do you do CPR on an adult? - ANS-Center of sternum, between the nipples
On an adult, when doing CPR, how deep should the chest compressions be? - ANS-2 inches
How fast should you do chest compressions? - ANS-You will do thirty chest compressions at a
rate of at least 100 per minute.
What is the most common airway obstruction in an unconscious individual? - ANS-Tongue
What is the tilt/chin lift method? - ANS-Place one hand on the victim's forehead and your other
hand underneath the victim's chin
How many rescue breaths should a person deliver? - ANS-2
When 2 people are doing CPR, when should they switch off? - ANS-Switching duties with
rescuer 2 every 5 cycles (30 compressions: 2 breaths = 1 cycle), or 2 minutes. (Switch should
take less than 5 seconds)
How do you put a bag mask on? - ANS-Position yourself directly over the victim's face.
Place the mask over the victim's mouth, using the bridge of the victim's nose for guidance to a
proper position.
Use the E-C clamp technique to hold the mask in place while you lift the jaw.
Squeeze the bag to give victim breaths while watching the chest rise. (Each squeeze should be
1 second)
Give the bag a squeeze every 5-6 seconds
Perform compressions if needed
What is the E-C clamp? - ANS-Use the thumb and index finger of one hand to make a "C",
pressing the edges of the mask around the victim's face. Your remaining fingers are used to lift
the chin (remaining 3 fingers form an "E") and open the airway.
Adult CPR Review: - ANS-Let's review:
Check the scene and make sure it's safe.
Check for consciousness. Tap the victim on the shoulder and shout. "Are you okay?"
Call for help or get someone to call 9-1-1. If you are alone with an adult, call for help
immediately.
Begin CPR (C-A-B-D)
C - Circulation/Compressions: Check for pulse, carotid artery (no pulse), immediately begin
chest compressions. Using the heel of one hand in the center of the sternum place your other
hand on top of the hand delivering the compression. Place your body directly over the adult and
lock out your arms. Give thirty chest compressions, pushing down at least 2" in depth, at a rate
of at least 100 per minute.
A - Airway: Open up the airway with the head tilt / chin lift method.
, B - Breathing: Pinch the victim's nose with the hand that is on the forehead. Deliver two rescue
breaths that make the chest visibly rise.
Continue thirty compressions and two breaths until an AED arrives, trained rescuers come on
the scene, the victim shows signs of life, or the scene becomes unsafe.
D - Defibrillation: AED (Automated External Defibrillator), turn on the AED and follow the voice
prompts.
Should you call or start CPR with a child? - ANS-If you are alone with a child, begin CPR
immediately for two minutes (five cycles of CPR; one cycle is thirty compressions/two breaths)
before leaving the child to call 9-1-1. Children cannot sustain life as long as an adult can without
oxygen.
What shouldn't be the pulse with a kid for doing CPR? - ANS-If a pulse not confirmed after 10
seconds, assume no pulse present and begin CPR. If a pulse is present but fewer than 60 beats
a minute begin CPR. If a pulse is present and it is over 60 beats per minute proceed to rescue
breathing.
How deep should the sternum fall with child CPR? - ANS-1/3 of the length of the sternum
When doing 2 person CPR with a child when should you switch? - ANS-(15 compressions: 2
breaths = 1 cycle)
Child CPR review: - ANS-Let's review: Child CPR recommended for children about 1 to 8 years
of age.
Check the scene and make sure it's safe.
Check for consciousness. Tap the victim on the shoulder and shout. "Are you okay?"
Call for help or get someone to call 9-1-1. If you are alone, begin CPR immediately for two
minutes (five cycles) and then call for help.
C - Circulation/Compressions: Check for pulse, carotid artery (no pulse), immediately begin
chest compressions. Give thirty chest compressions using the one or two handed compression
technique. One handed technique: Place the heel of one hand in the center of the sternum;
place your other hand on the child's head to support the head, neck and spine. Place your body
directly over the child and lock out your arm. Give thirty chest compressions at a depth of at
least 1/3 the depth of the chest at a rate of at least 100 per minute.

the scene, the victim shows signs of life, or the scene becomes unsafe.
D - Defibrillation: AED (Automated External Defibrillator), turn on the AED and follow the voice
prompts. Make sure the AED has child specific system/pads
